Canada adopted a new rule on June 12 that will mandate carriers to use an ELD that has been certified by a 3rd party. Currently, the FMCSA has not certified any of the 430 listed devices that have self-certified as meeting the technical standards. However, we could see this changing as devices are being certified through Canada’s new rule.

Canada will have two years from the date of the adopted rule to build out a system and allow the provinces to adapt their regulations to fit the new rule. Until this date, carriers are allowed to continue using their current method of tracking hours of service.

It has not been decided where the cost will lie but it is expected to fall on the ELD providers. This cost could eliminate many of the small players in the market.
